This is an eBay tool that I use every day to locate products that I can buy and resell or buy cheap and keep for myself and my family. And the great news is you can use it, too.

What is it? It's eBay's Saved Search feature and you can use it to start making money tomorrow.The Saved Search feature that will let you set up a saved search criteria and eBay will let you know when an auction that matches your search criteria has been posted.

Let's say you're on the lookout for a Pete Rose card to complete your collection. You could troll eBay every day on your own and to see if anyone has listed such a card or you can set up a saved search and make your life a lot easier.

Here's how it works....

Got to eBay.com and sign into your account. If you do not have an eBay account all you need to do is set up a free buyer's account.

After you're logged in, type in your search criteria into a search window. For this example we will type in Pete Rose. Click submit and you will get a page of search results that match your search criteria.

At the top right of the search results listing you will see a link labeled "Add To Favorites." Click the link.

On the next page you will see "Create a new search" or "Replace an existing search."

If this is a new search select the "Create a new search" button, give this search a name (the search term you used will be in the Search Name box by default, in this case "Pete Rose").

You can select to receive a daily email if there are new items listed that match your search criteria.

Click "Save Search."

Now you will receive an email every morning with new items that have been listed that match your saved search criteria.

If the search term Pete Rose is too broad you will receive notifications for every auction that has the term "Pete Rose" in the title or description. You can always narrow the saved search by adding "Pete Rose Card" or something more specific. Just don't get too specific or you may miss items that you'd be interested in.

How can you use the saved feature to make money on eBay?

Easy, you set a saved search to let you know when something has been listed for sale that you might buy and sell for a higher profit. For example that Pete Rose card might have been listed by someone who is willing to sell it cheap or doesn't know its real value. You could buy the card, make them happy, then sell it for a higher price yourself. This is how commerce works, folks. You buy cheap, you sell high.

Let's look at another example. Let's say you have an eBay shop that sells designer shoes. Naturally you would want to know when someone else lists designer shoes for sale because they may be a competitor you need to monitor or just an individual who has a closet full of designer shoes to sell cheap.

You set up a saved search with the keyword "designer shoes."

Each time an auction is posted with the term "designer shoes" in the title or description, eBay will let you know.

You can immediately check out the auction and if the shoes can be scarfed up and sold for a higher profit, you made money.

The first feature I want to talk about is the PayPal debit card. This is single handedly the one feature that makes PayPal halfway decent in my eyes. The next feature that I like about PayPal is the credit card. The PayPal credit card is nice because I never have to worry about keeping money in my PayPal account for eBay fees, or for items I may want to purchase on eBay. I can easily just use my PayPal credit card just as if it were cash in my account. Since I do not like to keep my money in my PayPal account, this is very useful. The card offers good rates, and offers some good bonuses.

Whatever it may be, I highly recommend taking full advantage of anything special that PayPal offers. You do not have any other options when you are talking about payments on eBay. PayPal really is the only way to go, like it or not. If I could use a different payment process I would, but since I can’t I make sure to take advantage of whatever PayPal offers.

You then take advantage of a little used feature of eBay, that not everybody knows about, called your ‘About Me’ page. This is a page that you can design yourself using html. The reason for this is that eBay obviously has to protect themselves from being used as an advertising agency, and eBay rules are that any selling done on eBay pages has to be done by eBay. However, you are allowed to place a link to your About Me page on your product Description in your listing. Anybody interested in your product can see your link and click on it. You are also permitted to advertise the link, and direct visitors to your Description box to your About Me page.

So where can you get stock cheap enough to make a good profit for yourself on any auction site?

Well here are some of the places I have got stock from previously.

Garage sales. The chances are you've gone most of your life seeing ads for these in local papers and flyers and completely ignored them. Start going to as many as you can. You won't find good things at every one, but when you find one person with good stuff, make them an offer for the lot - they'll be so happy about it that you can get a real bargain.

Markets. If your area has a market, then go there and look around for anything good. Markets are great for low cost items or items that are similar to top brand, quality items without the price tag! You could buy it there if it's cheap enough, or try to make friends with the market traders and find out who their suppliers are.

Pawn shops. Pawn shops don't usually know what to do with the junk they accumulate (unless it's jewellery, of course). Generally, they put their stock out on the shelves haphazardly, hoping that someday someone with a little money will just happen to come in, search around and buy wildly obscure things. Get them to offer you a discount for bulk.

Real auctions. Go to a real auction, as the chances are that you can resell things for more than they will sell them. After all, they only have a few hundred people in that room ? you have a few million to sell to!

Local newspapers. Place an ad in the local paper that reads "I pay cash for [your item type]", with your phone number. If you can afford it, make it a big display ad, so it'll be noticed. You will get lots of great stock very cheaply.

Ad boards. Get one of those little ads in the grocery store. People are always wanting to get rid of stuff around the house and ready for someone to come along and take the lot off their hands - sometimes you don't even need to pay for it!

Friends. Ask your friends if they have anything they'd like to sell you, and ask them to spread the word to their friends.

Become known. Give out business cards, mention to people what you do. The chances are that you'll come across someone who'll say "Oh, really? I've got a load of [item] I don't want?."

Shops. This might be a little surprising, but some real shops even sell things more cheaply than they sell on eBay. Take a look around your local deep discounter, and pay special attention to any shop that takes trade-ins from customers. The chances are they take a loss on trade-ins as a promotion, and are dying to get rid of that stock.

And finally: eBay! When you're looking at the completed items view, you'll notice the massive range of prices that items can sell for on eBay. Try taking the highest-priced item and searching for it on its own, then sort by lowest price first: I can almost guarantee that you'll see an auction for the same item where it sold for almost nothing. The trick is to find these flawed auctions before they close, win them using a bid sniping service, and then turn around and resell the item.

I have said it before, I'll say it again, nothing beats targeting the public domain for a vast storehouse of free to obtain, easy to process, fast selling eBay products. Look at these ideas spotted recently on eBay or still ripe for the picking.

1) PUBLIC DOMAIN RICHES

* Several of the world's most popular artists entered the public domain in the past few years, amongst them Cecil Aldin, master at illustrating dogs, wonderful at creating hunting and coaching scenes that regularly fetch double figure, sometimes three, sometimes four figure sums on eBay. Most people can't spare that kind of money to decorate their homes and offices but I bet most would buy a reprint copy of Cecil Aldin's great works. So look for Cecil Aldin books on eBay and buy a good original copy, scan the pictures onto your desktop and upload them to eBay. This way you can stock literally thousands of pictures and sell in quantity or individually at a few pounds apiece. Print them out to order on quality 90 gram paper; cover with paper back cellophane front bags, the kind florists use which you'll find at most bigger stationers listed in Yellow Pages.

* Study out-of-copyright photographs fetching high prices and multiple bids on eBay. Do this using the advanced search method mentioned in the article on becoming an eBay affiliate. Choose highest price products, buy the original if you can and relist copies making sure bidders know they are reprints. The truth is most people buy for picture value, not collecting or rarity value, and most would prefer $10 a copy than the $320.00 fetched for a real photograph of a mob lynching in America's deep south in the late 1900s (macabre but a really popular subject) or $280 for a late 1800s photograph of a gorilla. You best profits will come by offering reprints of items fetching high prices on eBay or something similar even if it means buying the original. It's money well spent.

2) AUCTION GIVEWAYS

There's a trick often found working at local auctions which can repay handsome dividends for you.

Where goods are exposed for all and sundry to view and the auction house is under-staffed or staff rushed off their feet, look for valuable items hidden in generally low value products by unscrupulous visitors.

I have to admit, if I find these things and spot a scam I always tell the auctioneer, who usually tells me to forget about it and bid anyway.

Last month I bought a grotty postcard album containing really rubbish postcards. At face value that is, because hidden behind some of those awfully common greetings were cards I knew would fetch double figure sums on eBay.

I told the auctioneer, he with the 'Don't bother me' attitude, then returned to bid next day.

A real photographic postcard of the Australian Cricket Team taken in 1902 went for £107 (I sold these items on eBay’s UK site), a view of Walney Lighthouse went for £77, a view of the Miniature Railway in Groundle, Isle of Man, fetched £72. Many others fetched £20 or more.

The album of rubbish stuff at auction? It went for £100. To me. These valuable cards were hidden behind dozens of other low cost specimens by rogue bidders who thought no one would spot their con and the album would go cheap, to them, only they'd never pay more than a few pounds to get their prize. Many even have the nerve to bid and I know who the perpetrators are as they're at every auction where this scam happens.

Other popular treasure hunting cons at auction include hiding paper items and jewelery under paper liners in drawers or behind dustwrappers on low value books. I've even seen an album of rare actor and actress autographs concealed beneath a paper liner in a jewelery box filled with tacky baubles and the jewelery box not much better.

So if something looks really naff, look more closely, your cloud could have a silver lining.

eBay and a Little-Known Way to Sell in Bulk and Make Fabulous Profits Each Time

Imagine this for a part-time business opportunity: you fancy working evenings only, you need to make $500 a day pure profit; you do it on just five listings a day fetching a minimum $100 profit per listing plus eBay fees. You can even make sure every listing actually fetches that kind of profit and maybe a great deal more.

You do this by listing multi-product lots of potentially quite valuable items, so attracting collectors and personal users for whatever product, while also offering really nice mark up potential for fellow eBay sellers wanting to dismantle your lots and sell items individually on eBay.

I create at least twenty multi-product listings each month, focussing on small collectibles like postcards and stamps. My daughters list fewer each month but often exceed my profits. My youngest, Victoria, lists jewellery in bundles; 20-year-old Alexandra prefers dog prints, playing cards, craftwork materials, broken jewellery parts.

Last month I made over $500 for one evening's work. I buy thousands of postcards at auction where I rarely have time to check them properly beforehand. I pay about 5p each across the board. I remove prime cards, those I expect to fetch really high prices, list them individually on eBay, then I bundle the remainder into big boxes, or displayed in old fashioned albums. Last week those bundles fetched me $60, $50, $30 and $20, individual items went for a total $450, the lot cost me $80. I know what I'm doing with postcards, but I know little about stamps or coins, but I can make the same easy money from stamp and coins as I do with postcards.

Almost anything can be sold in multiple lots, subject to availability, demand, size and weight restrictions. Smaller, compact products tend to predominate, being easier to pack, lighter to process, cheaper to post.

Tips

* The big secret is to create unique multi-product bundles, comprising hundreds of items, like playing cards, broken jewellery parts, cigarette cards, ephemera, make-up, maps, vintage and modern toys, craftwork items for scrapbookers and jewellery makers, doll's house furniture, DVDs and CDs, and so on.

* The next big secret is to create an air of mystery, so no one really knows the full extent of what your bundle contains. Do this by piling everything into a box, revealing items on the top and spilling round the sides, give tempting details about items that don't show in your photographs and lead to impulse bidding, lots of questions, and frantic last minute bidding.

* Curiosity is usually intense so be ready to answer lots of emails, use the tick box available inside your eBay account to make your answers accessible to all and save time answering similar questions. Create long descriptions to keep visitors interested but don't waste valuable time describing and photographing every item. Keep people guessing, describe one or two items in detail, emphasise how much winning bidders will enjoy sorting through hundreds/thousands more items in your package.

* Sort overall lots into smaller piles, arrange them neatly on a table or floor, have some parts tantalisingly concealed by larger items. Pack your listing with pictures of various parts of your main product taken from all angles. A Sneaky Way to Buy Goods at a Discount and Resell Them on eBay

I hate to say this, given I once belonged to their ranks, but many sellers at itinerant flea markets and fairs are moonlighting, not declaring their profits to banks or the authorities. It’s all cash in hand. And it follows that most don’t accept checks or credit card payments, even PayPal. It’s all traceable, unlike cash! More than this, those other traceable forms of payment also cost the seller, sometimes heavily, in terms of banking fees and credit card processing charges.

Cash buyers are a welcome sight to traders at these one off events and will usually haggle for whatever you buy and pay for with cash. Most will haggle at least to the amount they save from otherwise banking a check or processing a credit card or PayPal payment. Over the short term and with just a handful of traders that can also represent cumulatively very nice savings for you.

But those savings are nothing to what itinerant traders will discount from normal prices for anyone purchasing their products in bulk. Ten per cent is usual on two or three items purchased together (especially if you say ‘trade’ and let the trader know you are also a seller). Haggle more and you could get twenty per cent discounted, much more if you put the products back on the stall and pretend to walk away without buying.

Okay, it’s a bit unethical, but you’re doing nothing illegal, and if the seller isn't worried, you shouldn't be worried either.

Let Rudyard Kipling Help You Write Great eBay Listings

I read once that writers need refer to just four lines of rhyme to ensure their articles, manuals, today even eBay listings, provide all the information the reader needs to know about a particular subject. I follow those four lines in whatever I write, especially eBay listings.

Those words come from a poem (after The Elephant’s Child) by Rudyard Kipling and they go like this:

I keep six honest serving-men;

(They taught me all I knew);

Their names are What and Why and When;

And How and Where and Who.

All that matters for our purposes are six words: WHAT, WHY, WHEN, HOW, WHERE, WHO.

It’s important to remember the poem also, to recite it each time you list something on eBay, every time you write a report or guide on eBay or follow techniques mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter about marketing outside of eBay.

Those words are important to most items listed on eBay, where potential bidders want to know (for example) WHAT is the product, WHY is it for sale, WHEN was it created, HOW old is it, WHERE did it originate from, WHO will benefit from it?

Those are quick examples, in practice you’ll probably use the same word several times in some listings and not at all in others.

Let me show how I might use those six words to describe an old postcard. I won’t tell you what the card depicts, how old it is, you can guess for yourself from my worked example below.

Okay, it’s rough, and I’d have to be pretty sure potential profits from the postcard concerned are worth the time spent creating such a detailed description. I would not use the format for cheapie postcards, or common-a-garden types such as park scenes, little-known artists, and other generally low price cards. But I would use the technique for postcard types I’ve researched on eBay and found to fetch regular high finishing prices.

I would also use the technique for one-off prints and vintage newspapers, illustrated books, rare antiques and collectibles.

When I have the information, such as above, I would merge it all into my description, like this:

(As I continue writing my description I would delete the information already used from my template to avoid duplication). The postcard was postally used in 1906 from London to New York by a member of the London branch of the RSPCA to a friend in New York.

Why The Best Products to Sell on eBay are Dirty and Nasty, the Dirtier and Nastier, the Better

Here’s a great idea, it’s never let me down, and it involves buying items no one else wants which can generate 100% to 1000% profit for you every time. And it works whether you buy at auction, car boot sale, jumble sale, charity shop, even on eBay itself. You are looking for items which, on the surface, look so disgusting that no one even gives them a second glance. At auction they’re the lots right at the back of the room, or under tables, wherever they’re unlikely to get in the way of serious bidders’ viewing more attractive auction lots. Those words ‘disgusting’ and ‘unlikely to get in the way’ are operative here, because even the auctioneer doesn’t expect serious bidders for rubbish like this. But this rubbish is like gold to some people, myself included, and normally reveals itself in dirty albums, torn and tatty boxes, books with ripped and filthy bindings, plastic bags tied at the top with elastic bands and time ravaged so you can’t see through their once transparent surface.

The big secret about items like this has to do with people judging a book by its cover. If the cover isn’t good, it’s assumed the contents (the story or information contained) is also deficient, and so people don’t buy.

The experts know, the dirtier the cover (or other container such as box, book, tea chest), the older the contents are likely to be and the more valuable the contents become with every layer stripped from the top. Case in point: two months ago, at a Yorkshire auction sale, I spotted a dirty cardboard box poking beneath a table covered with albums packed with valuable stamps and postcards. First thing I found in the box was a newspaper, totally tatty, disgustingly dirty. Next came a book, torn and damaged, foul smelling and every page scribbled beyond recognition. Then came a few better books, a couple of maps (worth a fiver apiece on eBay), more half decent stuff followed, and half way down came a huge scrapbook packed with news clippings and autographed photographs of Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier (I made £100 from the scrapbook, several hundred pounds from the autographs). And I hadn’t got to the good stuff yet. There followed theatre programmes from the 1930s and 40s (autographed by Olivier, Leigh, Bud Flanagan, Margaret Rutherford, and many more). After that I found …. better stop there, because I really don’t have time or space to list the contents of that dirty old box no one else look at or bid against me that day.

Much the same goes for dirty books which often contain valuable prints or maps, plastic bags of seemingly yukky beads which often contain valuable gems, dirty albums containing boring postcard views behind which hide valuable postmarks. Get the picture?

Why Some of the World's Top eBay Sellers are Not and Never Want to be PowerSellers

It’s true, there are benefits associated with becoming a PowerSeller and boasting that prestigious PowerSeller icon on your listings. The bigger you grow in the PowerSeller ranks, the greater those benefits become. All PowerSellers have priority access to eBay staff to ask questions and help solve problems. Gold PowerSellers and above even have emergency telephone access to eBay staff.

It may surprise you to learn these benefits are available to anyone, if you know where to look.

More about this later, let me tell you why some of the world’s top eBayers are not and never want to be PowerSellers. Some don’t actually qualify, even if they sell way more product each month than the world’s top eBayer. That’s because to qualify as a PowerSeller you must meet a specific level of product sales or profits over a three month period in one eBay account.

‘In one eBay account’ are the operative words here, because most eBay sellers actually do have just one eBay account, into which they commit everything from household castoffs to surplus collectibles, last weekend’s boot sale buys, dropshipped items, and much more. In such cases, the key to becoming a PowerSeller (in the UK) is simply to sell a minimum £750 worth of stock each month or 100 items (Bronze membership) to £95,000 of sales or 5,000 products for Titanium membership.

There is a big disadvantage to this ‘throw it all in the pot’ principle, and it’s one of never being able to specialise or grow a niche market for your eBay business. Niche marketing is a powerful concept and on eBay you’ll see sellers specialising in one specific product type and generating thousands of sales each month from just a few products. This is because their customers come to recognise niche eBay sellers as THE place to go for products to satisfy their buying needs. The seller also gets to cut eBay listing and final selling fees to the bone, by listing just a few items at auction or Buy It Now. Those few items generate visitors from eBay’s search engines who are then directed to other items available inside the eBayer’s shop where listing fees are incredibly low compared to those for auction listed items.

There’s another reason why the world’s biggest sellers may never qualify to become PowerSellers, which also explains why most don’t want to qualify anyway. It’s because many of them have lots of eBay accounts, each catering to a specific niche audience, where cumulative sales are sometimes low as often happens in tight niche markets. But across several eBay accounts profits can be enormous.

How to obtain many of those benefits normally reserved for major PowerSellers, such as emergency telephone support? Well it’s only in the UK that you can’t speak directly to eBay staff and must wait in line for email support if you are not a PowerSeller. But go to ebay.com, click on ‘Live Help’ right side of the home page, give your eBay ID, type out your question, and wait for an eBay agent to reply online. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has asked me that question and that way I’d probably make more money than I’ve ever lost by posting goods before checks clear – or don’t clear as the case might be!

It is a problem, especially for new eBay sellers – you don’t want to celebrate your first few sales on eBay only to find the checks bounce for goods you’ve already sent to winning bidders.

The problem for newcomers is one of fearing negative feedback for not delivering the goods immediately after payment arrives, even though checks take up to seven days to clear (or to bounce!)

Thankfully, there are ways round the problem and I can honestly say I invariably send goods before checks clear and I’ve only ever been let down twice! For tiny amounts!

My view is that most people are honest, few will bounce checks and, for small amounts (less than $20 in my books) I always send the goods without clearing checks first. The same goes for payments awaiting clearance through PayPal. My philosophy has always been: it’s not worth making the honest majority wait for their goods just because a tiny few payments might be dishonoured. You need to keep your good customers happy, lead them to buy from you again, and nothing works better than fulfilling the goods and trusting them to honour their side of the bargain.

That said, if a lot of money is involved (you must decide this level for yourself) or the buyer looks ‘iffy’, I break my own rule and let payment clear first.

With experience these are the rules I apply which you are free to copy in your business:

* Check buyer feedback, look for high feedback scores (100 plus) from sellers, look for any negatives or neutrals indicating payment disputes. Be wary of feedback representing tiny amounts of money which might indicate your winning bidder has grown feedback fast on penny items to turn tail and scam subsequent sellers of more expensive items.

* Risk low amounts to new buyers without high feedback scores, but not if feedback already indicates a problem customer. For example, I would never send goods money uncleared for anyone with negative feedback or low positive feedback with plentiful negatives. Incidentally, you can program your listings to refuse bids from anyone with negative feedback scores, -1, -2, for example. The place to do this is in the ‘Buyer Requirements’ Section of the ‘Payment & Postage’ section of the selling process.

* Decide a maximum acceptable sum beyond which you will let all monies clear before sending the goods. I use $20 but I will go much higher for buyers with good feedback who have been registered on eBay for more than a few months and for anyone with whom I have already had a trouble-free transaction.

* Bear in mind banks charge you when payment fails, unlike PayPal where you won’t be charged. I recommend PayPal for all your transactions and, as for all of those derogatory things being said and written about PayPal, I don’t believe any of it!

* There is one time I do clear checks before sending the goods. It’s when someone buys, the check hasn’t even arrived yet, and the winning bidder begins hassling me about delivery times or, worse still, threatens negative feedback if I don’t get the product to them fast. In my experience payment from people like this have always failed. I tend to ignore this rule for past buyers, and any long registered eBayers with good feedback, but not new eBayers or others with poor or no feedback.

There is a problem here, being new eBayers with low positive feedback, in which case I check feedback from people who’ve sold to them already. If those sellers also have low feedback, I smell a conspiracy, if they are well-known sellers with lots of positive feedback, I relent and send the goods. BUT I NEVER SEND THE GOODS FAST WITHOUT CLEARING PAYMENT WHEN I AM THREATENED WITH NEGATIVE FEEDBACK!
